The battle against Volan the colossus takes place in the zone event Dreams of Blood and Bone. This takes place in the zone of Ashora, generally late at night (server time). It's a somewhat long event, but it's really a lot of fun and the rewards (especially if you're looking for Infinity Stones), makes it well worth taking part in. The event takes place in multiple stages, and we're going to go over them so you know what to expect as you progress through the battle.
Before You StartBefore you jump into the event, you want to be well prepared. There's a lot of damage everyone takes throughout the battle, so you'll want to arm yourself with the following:
- A hybrid (or pure healing) spec. While this isn't required, it helps out a lot if you're having problems getting enough heals. Even something that doesn't heal a lot can go a long way, as any boosted survivability is beneficial
- Potions (at least health, but mana can be beneficial as well, depending on your class and specs). These shouldn't be used much, if at all, but keep them just in case!
Under great conditions, you shouldn't really need to use either of the above, but it depends greatly on how many others are participating, their classes/roles, etc.
The FightAt the beginning of the battle, some elite mobs will spawn. Simply kill them to get the fight with Volan started.
The first order of business with Volan is to destroy his chest and leg armor, which is three pieces total. During this area of the fight, you need to beware of ground AoE's and be sure to stay out of them. They do a lot of damage and they can be tightly packed together, so use the massive land to your advantage. Once these pieces are all broken, you move on to the next phase.
At this point you're attacking Volan's tail, while attempting to protect the Brevanic Restraints. There will be mobs spawning, so it's very important to pick them up as you can, while still focusing on the boss' tail. If you look at the bottom of the screen you will also see a casting bar for “Volan's Rage.” If this finishes casting, he will break free of the restraints and the next part of the battle will continue. If you manage to break the tail armor prior to this cast bar finishing, you will get bonus rewards!
After Volan takes off, you will be chasing him into Eternal City. For this part all you're doing is following him.
Once inside the Eternal City, Volan will take his place on a large circular area. Here you'll get the goal of destroying his arm, back and tail armor, which consists of 9 pieces altogether. This is also where the major damage starts coming in, so be watchful of your health and try to keep it up the best you can. It's also worth noting that the 9 pieces of armor you need to destroy all have high health, so this is where the battle starts to get a lot longer. What piece dies first doesn't really matter, just attack whatever you are able to get to.
With all of the armor down, Volan's head armor becomes vulnerable. At this point you will need to destroy it, which is easiest to do from the top level of the city. To get up here, use one of the purple orbs on the ground to float into the air, and then use your temporary skill to shoot across to one of the tops of the buildings.
The final assault takes place against Volan himself, which is easy to do since he's pretty big! Just keep your health up and continue pounding away at him.
The RewardsThe main rewards obtained by doing this event are Infinity Stones and unlocking Eternal City for the quests that are located within. For each part of Volan's armor that you (or your raid) helps take down, you get one Infinity Stone. Furthermore, you also get a nice bonus at the end (of around 10). All-in-all you can obtain over 20 Infinity Stones per event you take part in, but keep in mind that the fight does take a while.
As for the quests, there are both daily quests and story quests found within Eternal City. While none of these are required, they can help greatly if you're wanting to work on achievements or learn more about the lore behind the game.
Tips for Fighting VolanAs soon as Volan enters the Eternal City, you are able to get on the building tops. While you're up there some mobs will spawn, so they need taken down, but there will also be cannons you can man to help take down the boss faster. If you walk on to one of the purple orb platforms that you see on a building's top, it will shoot you over to the building it's facing, making it very easy to travel between the buildings.
If you die, you will resurrect near Volan. Just run back to him and resume your attacking!
If you're in a raid, you will get credit for all of the parts your raid helps take down. You don't need to ensure that you hit each part of the boss, and instead can just focus on whichever part is closest to you.
