Runecrafter can also "Runebreak" items. Runebreaking an item returns materials needed to craft runes. Various Powders, shards and Crystals are only found through runebreaking. These materials can be combined for a higher quality, or broken down for a lesser quality.
Runecrafting does not require any other professions to supply materials, but it is wise to take another profession that creates items you can runebreak. Outfitting, Armorcrafting or Weaponsmithing would make good choices. Or you could always opt to take a gathering profession such as Foraging, Butchery or Mining to help supplement your income by selling the materials in the Auction House.
To get level relevant ingredients, Runebreak gear/items the same level as your Runecrafting skill. This guarantees ingredients you need – you won’t need to transmute as often. Mouse over the runes you are making to find out what level range they apply to.
For runes that can be applied to multiple slots, also sell them in the AH in multiples.
Lower level players are looking for main stat boosts such as Dex, Str, Wis, Int. Higher level players also want Spell Power, Spell Crit, Attack Power, and Physical Crit.
